My Experience With Using A YnM Weighted Blanket

My Experience With Using A YnM Weighted Blanket

I’d been having some trouble sleeping. I have a history of adrenal fatigue. My body sometimes releases the stress hormone cortisol at inappropriate times. Meaning that I’ll become wired at 3 am as a boost of cortisol wakes me from sound sleep.

Then I learned that people sleep with a weighted blanket to reduce stress and sleep better. And so I thought I would give it a try. And see if a weighted blanket could calm my extra cortisol enough for better sleep.

What is a weighted blanket?

Like the name indicates, weighted blankets are made with added weight so that they feel heavier than a typical blanket. The science behind Weighted blankets is called Deep pressure touch stimulation (or DPTS). This is a type of therapy that almost anyone can benefit from. DTPS can mimic the feeling of being hugged, swaddled or cradled. DTPS also triggers the production of the “feel-good hormone” serotonin, which calms anxiety, relieves stress, and can even lull them into a sound sleep.

Weighted blankets come in different weights. And it’s important to pick one that’s heavy enough for your body. But you also don’t want one that’s too heavy. The ideal weighted blanket should be about 10% of your body weight plus an extra couple of pounds. Since I weigh about 125 pounds, I chose a blanket that was 15 pounds. 10% if 125 is 12.5 plus 2 extra pounds equals about 15 pounds.

Buying a weighted blanket

After some investigation, I found the blankets are often not well-stocked in local stores because of the wide variety of sizes and weights needed for different people. Instead, they can be ordered online through individual company sites or, even easier, through Amazon. Purchasing your weighted blankets online allows for the best possible size and feature options that are tailored specifically to the person who will be using it.

However finding the right blanket on Amazon was a bit overwhelming since there were so many to choose from. I ultimately opted for a Weighted Blanket by YnM, In the end, that was the right choice. YnM Weighted Blanket 2.0 (15 lbs, 48 x 72 inches) , is made from super-soft, 100% cotton-fabric blankets filled with thinner polyfill and premium glass beads. The price for the blanket is only US$70, the best deal ever you can find on Amazon. And the vendor, YnM, as one of Amazon Best Sellers, known for its best prices, high quality and good reviews. YnM got 4.4 out of 5 stars and over 3000 customer reviews on Amazon, this weighted blanket has helped plenty of people get better sleep. That is why I choose YnM after long time searching on Internet.

My experience

For about the first week or two, it did nothing for me. If anything it made my insomnia worse because I had this newly foreign, and different feeling object in my bed that I wasn’t used to having there. Plus I had to finagle with figuring out what was most comfortable for me as far as how I like my blanket positioned – do I want it on my entire body or just over my legs or torso.  In other words, I had to get used to it.

I learned to make some adjustments. Some nights I had to turn on the air conditioning to cool the room from the extra heat. Other nights I only had the weighted blanket go up to my stomach, leaving my upper body free. Now that I’ve got all those kinks figured out, my weighted blanket is just another part of my comfy, nicely bed. Same as my other comforter, sheets, and pillow.

Each night I get into bed as usual and drape the blanket over the duvet cover and over my body, from my toes to my shoulders. I was falling asleep faster with less tossing and turning to get comfortable and relaxed. I was staying asleep through the night. Since I don’t bring it with me when I travel (kind of heavy), I am more aware of the difficulties I have trying to get to sleep and stay asleep without the help of the blanket.

YnM Blanket 2.0  does not come with a duvet cover, and while you can purchase them separately, I’d just say forget it. That is a pity.  Although YnM 2.0 is completely machine washable, I strongly recommend that you purchase a duvet cover together with the blanket because it can keep the blanket quite clean, requiring only the occasional cleaning of the cover itself.

If you’re a light or anxious sleeper who wants to find an alternative to sleep medication, the YnM weighted blanket 2.0 is worth a shot.
