Can’t Sleep in a New Place? A Weighted Blanket Can Help You!

Have you ever had trouble sleeping in a new place? You fly somewhere to give a talk, attend a sales convention, visit friends, or meet with prospective employers. And you spend the night tossing and turning. I personally have this problem every time I sleep somewhere different, without fail. It can be very frustrating, especially if I have an important activity happening the next day.

First Night Effect

The phenomenon is so familiar to sleep researchers that it has its own name:  FNE (the first night effect). For some reason, when we tuck ourselves up under a new roof, we often have a troubled night and wake up feeling groggy and tired. Scientists have studied sleeping brains for half a century in the hope of understanding the first night effect.

Researchers from Brown University recently monitored the sleep of 35 healthy people and discovered why sleeping in a strange bed causes you to toss and turn all night long. In the study, published in the journal Current Biology, researchers observed the brain waves of their participants. The two brain hemispheres showed stark differences. The left displayed signs of wakefulness while the right showed signs of sleep. It is this left side—the one that remained alert—that acted as a “night watch” patrolman during the sleep, leading to an unfulfilling snooze session.

They also point out that some birds and marine mammals always sleep this way—one hemisphere asleep while the other is active–to compensate for risks that they are vulnerable to when asleep. Birds sleep with one eye open – and one half of the brain awake – to ensure they are not eaten by night time predators. Dolphins use a similar trick, and alternate sleep between the two halves of the brain, so they can rest while keeping a constant eye out for sharks.

The Evolutionary Theory

One theory is that poor sleep on the first night in a new environment is a natural, evolutionary self-defense mechanism. It’s argued that your brain decides that a new place can mean extra danger to you, so a part of your brain stays alert. You could say it’s keeping watch while you rest.

In ancient times this could have been vital for self-preservation. Moving from a safe spot to a new and unfamiliar area could increase the danger from wild animals or other humans. This probably required early humans to be much more alert, even when sleeping.

As you can imagine, this vigilant half-sleep is a real asset in dangerous and unpredictable environments. Unfortunately, your brain might count hotel rooms and new apartments as dangerous.

How to Fall Asleep Fast on The First Night

in line with previous research, they found that the average time it took people to fall asleep was much greater on the first night than subsequent nights. However, there are many ways you can take to fall asleep fast on the first night, the weighted blankets is definitely the best one among them.

Like the name indicates, weighted blankets are made with added weight so that they feel heavier than a typical blanket. The weighted blanket is a sleep product came from the Deep Pressure Touch therapy which uses proprioceptive input, or deep touch pressure stimulation, to activate pressure points on the body. These points are connected to relaxation, mood enhancement, and better sleep. If you have ever cuddled under a fluffy down blanket, or you feel calm and relaxed while zipped up in a heavy sleeping bag, you have probably already experienced the benefits of Deep Pressure Touch therapy. According to the Journal of Sleep Medicine and Disorders, studies have shown that weighted blankets help people fall asleep faster and get more deep sleep.

If you are thinking of investing in a weighted blanket, now you can easily get one from Amazon. The two most important criteria for choosing a weighted blanket are weight and size. The thumb rule is to choose 10% of your body weight. But the lighter a blanket is, the smaller it tends to get in size. So check the dimensions carefully before buying and order a couple pounds of extra weight if you think the size may run small.

We strongly recommend YnM weighted blanket 2.0 {15 lbs, 48”x72”, Twin Size} as the best choice.
