Weighted blanket

I Tried Using a Weighted Blanket to Sleep Well. Here’s the Story.

I do not have autism or sensory issues, however I do have sleep issues. My sleep is often compromised since being diagnosed and learning to live with this cruel lung disease.  Poor sleep just makes everything feel worse, escalating my struggles throughout the day including physical and mental fatigue, along with emotions that run high when I am tired.

Therefore I was eager to find a way to get a better night’s rest (without having to resort to drugs). Recently I had been seeing weighted blankets pop up in my social feeds over the past couple of weeks.  Like the name indicates, weighted blankets are made with added weight so that they feel heavier than a typical blanket. The science behind Weighted blankets is called Deep pressure touch stimulation (or DPTS). This is a type of therapy that almost anyone can benefit from.  Weighted blankets are seeing a surge in popularity lately, with many proponents saying they have therapy effects as follow:● Reduce Anxiety. Weighted blankets can help reduce anxiety in children and adults. Weighted blankets help ground your body during sleep by pushing it down. This process, known as “grounding”;can have a profoundly calming effect. ● Reduce Depression.By providing a touch of deep pressure, weighted blankets can promote relaxation and help break this cycle (Depression). This can trigger the release of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, which are hormones that feel well produced in the brain. These hormones help fight stress, anxiety, and depression. ● Enhance sleep quality. You get a better quality of sleep, thanks to this extra weight spread throughout the blanket, our brain has a different sensory perception than usual and feels more comfortable.● Help combat ADHD symptoms. A lot of children with ADHD use weighted blankets to calm themselves after school or during therapy sessions or to relax and fall asleep. The use of a weighted blanket in those children is based on the mechanism that has the blanket to use the pressure. The pressure of the blanket is distributed evenly throughout the body, which according to some research can provide relief of anxiety and stress to people with sleeping problems.

Since I already knew the benefits of weighted blankets, so I quickly made a decision to purchase a weighted blanket to help my sleep.  However finding a good weighted blanket was a bit overwhelming since there were so many to choose from.  I ultimately opted for YnM Bamboo Weighted Blanket  {15 lbs, 48”x72”, Twin Size} .  In the end, that was the right choice. The blankets made from 100% natural bamboo viscose, and the weights are from glass beads, range from 7 lbs. to 30 lbs. The rule of thumb for choosing weight is for it to be 10 percent of the user’s body weight, plus a pound or two.  And the vendor, YnM , as one of the top sellers on Amazon, known for good price and high quality, got 4.5 out of 5 with over 3000 reviews.

The 15 lbs box showed up that evening and I hauled it up the stairs. The pellets are small and round if you rub the blanket pockets between your fingers, but once spread out they are unnoticeable. When I slipped under the 15 pounds YnM bamboo blanket, I felt like I was wrapped in a cocoon, as if the blanket were hugging me, I felt the fabric is cool to the touch, reminiscent of the feeling you get when you climb into a fresh hotel bed.  Thanks to the extra soft, silky smooth 300 thread count bamboo viscose, the blanket kept me cool and comfortable. The density of a folded up blanket is a lot less noticeable when spread evenly over the body, it mostly just feels like a slight pressure all over.

Normally, I’m pretty restless in bed, and the act of moving around makes my mind wander. But, because I couldn’t physically move as much, I noticed that my thoughts weren’t racing as much either. I don’t feel the need to reach for my phone to have something playing to get my mind to stop, I don’t spend my last waking moments thinking or worrying about things, I can just focus on drifting off.  I didn’t wake up once in the middle of the night, which is very rare for me and after 7 hours of solid sleep, I felt so refreshed that I didn’t even need to stop for my iced coffee on the way to office.

Final Thoughts:

Weighted blanket has been a game-changer for me, and helps me fall asleep almost immediately. And it could work for you too, so don’t hesitate. Buy one for yourself or anyone else in the family that needs a hug. A really long lasting, serotonin releasing hug.
